As an artist, my work reflects upon a prior professional career as an architect and educator. Until recent years, I was better known in the State of Florida for my energy-efficient Cracker-style homes than for my drawings or paintings. My book, CLASSIC CRACKER: Florida*s Wood-Frame Vernacular Architecture, is a popular treatise on the subject.
From this background, I approach art as an opportunity to simplify structure in nature and in man-made form to its basic tectonic elements. At the same time I am eager that my work present a sense of place imbued by the regional landscape and vernacular architecture. This is true for me whether I am sketching white-washed churches in pen and ink on Mykonos, composing a painting of austere structural components at a dilapidated old store in the Everglades or assembling a collage of my neighbors red boathouse on Lake Santa Fe where my wife and I live and work.
